Cultural Enrichment

What is cultural enrichment?

As one of the three pillars of the Latino Honor Society at Notre Dame, cultural enrichment fosters and furthers our understanding of our own rich and unique culture. It calls upon us to help and encourage others as well as ourselves to learn about our language, traditions, values, and background, while also embracing and accepting the various and distinct cultures present among us. Cultural enrichment brings us together to achieve personal growth and promote cultural understanding throughout the various communities we are a part of.

What counts as cultural hours?

Any events, lectures and activities that centered around Latino or Latin American culture and/or issues can be counted toward your cultural hour requirement. Some examples are lectures by professors on Latino or Latin American issues, going to Spanish Mass and/or events put on by clubs or institutes on campus.

Examples of some clubs and institutes include: Student Coalition for Immigration Advocacy (SCIA), Latino Student Alliance (LSA), Institute for Latino Studies (ILS), Multicultural Student Programs and Services, Ballet Folklorico Azul y Oro, Coro Primavera and MariachiND. Check this page for a list of upcoming events and opportunities for cultural hours.

What is the cultural hour requirement for LHS?

Active Latino Honor Society members must participate in events, discussions and/or activities hosted at one of the affiliate universities and/or the local South Bend/Mishawaka Latino community. Participation in other events or activities outside of these communities must seek approval by the LHS officers and cultural commissioner to count toward the hour requirement.

To fulfill the requirement for Honorary Status, you have the choice of completing either 5 cultural hours and 10 service hours OR 10 cultural hours and 5 service hours each semester. Please record your approved cultural engagement opportunities within one week of participation in the form by selecting the link below.
